Faith Ringgold, An EXTRA Ordinary School

People ask who we are.  The answer is that Faith Ringgold is a school where rigorous Common Core standards-based Language Arts and Mathematics curricula are implemented in the classrooms on a daily basis.  This year, our focus is on Writing. Science, Social Studies, Arts, Music, PE are integrated within the curricula.

But to fully answer this question, one must think of Leonardo Da Vinci, a Renaissance man:  engineer, inventor, scientist, artist, and more. MichaelAngelo learned and taught others about the world around him through the lenses of an artist and a scientist.  Faith Ringgold is sort of like that.  We aim to be a project-based, hands-on learning school where we implement and deliver a curriculum with a strong emphasis on and integration of subjects with the Performing Arts (dance, music and drama), Visual Arts (drawing), and Science (hands-on).  Over the last few years, students have enjoyed drawing, writing poetry, pottery, crafts, ballroom dancing, hula, Tahitian dancing, playing the ukulele, drama, sports, film making, etc. during “Science and Arts Block” sessions once a week.  Students really enjoy and look forward to this portion of the week.

Currently, during Science/Art Blocks, one of the blocks integrates the study of dance and movement with physiology and physics and creation of simple machines. Another class integrates Science and Singing by having music with content about tide pools and salt marshes.  The Seasonal Science/Art block class integrates culturally sensitive art themes with science content.  For example, in the Fall, in October, students will be creating artwork related to Anatomy and the human skeleton. Another example, in the winter, studies of icicle formation may be included in the lessons.  In the upper grade, Biology/physical sciences and visual arts will be integrated with their garden and horticultural projects.  Another block incorporates arts and singing with Astronomy.  Future Art blocks in the process of creation are ukulele and hula classes.

We also have instrumental music and vocal/choir music on a pull out basis for the students in Grades 5 to 8.

We have an active Student Council and Student Leadership Club with students who are involved in public speaking.  The afterschool Drama Club enjoys working on mini-skits and presenting them to their peers.

Our teachers are all very talented and special, each possessing unique talents that make them well-qualified educators here at Faith Ringgold. In addition to being highly qualified individuals, they are creative accomplished artists, poets, crafters, actresses, musicians, dancers, writers, and “scientists.”

We have students from Kindergarten through Eight grade.

At our special school, we enjoy and value high parent participation.  Our parents are very active and involved in our school and classrooms. We love seeing and working with our parents.  With parent support, each classroom has opportunities to participate in numerous study trips.  Last year, and in years before that, students from our school had opportunities to participate in approximately six standards-based study trips per year.  Students benefited from outdoor learning and rich educational experiences gained from these standards-based and grade level standards-correlated study trips.  With tremendous parent and community support, past study trips have included trips to the Nutcracker Ballet, Cable Cars Museum, Chinatown, Monterey Bay Aquarium, the Exploratorium, Chabot Space Center, theaters, UC Berkeley, As Games at the Coliseum, Ardenwood Farm, Pumpkin Patch Farms, The Egyptian Museum in San Jose, Great America, Santa Cruz Board Walk, Science Camp and much, much, more.  Students have learned tremendously from these unforgettable and remarkable study trips.

There are many more reasons why our school is unique and different from other schools.  We are all humbled and honored to be a part of this wonderful school.  Students take pride in attending Faith Ringgold.
